  • Classic Albums: Anthem To Beauty

    The Grateful Dead

    Year: 1969

    Runtime: 60 min

This installment of the Classic Albums series follows the making of two Grateful Dead albums, the fiercely experimental Anthem of the Sun and the understated masterwork American Beauty, which spawned melodic gems like "Sugar Magnolia" and "Ripple." Between the archival scenes and contemporary interviews with band members, the program shows a band making seismic in roads in pop music and five young guys coming to terms with artistry, mortality, and, yes, the pursuit of happiness. There is priceless footage of Neal Cassady driving Ken Kesey's bus and of the Dead, surrounded by martini sipping hipsters, on Playboy After Dark. The best scenes involve band members talking about specific songs (you will never hear Phil Lesh's "Box of Rain" again without thinking of it as a gift to his dying father) or deconstructing a tune by playing each track separately. Intimate and surprisingly cohesive, Anthem to Beauty is a rare glimpse into how the Dead's magic was made.

Frontman Warren Haynes promised the crowd a crazy night, and didnt disappoint, leading off with Railroad Boy and Thorazine Shuffle. The second set also featured several covers, including the lead-off Money and Have a Cigar by Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones Angie. In the early 1980’s, growing in a similar yet geographically separate way to the “grunge” movement in Seattle, was a new and lesser known genre of music known as “desert rock.” It was a catch-all style that ultimately evolved from jam-band generator parties that took place in remote desert locations outside of Palm Springs, CA. "Desert Age" traces the complete historical lineage of the people, places and bands that shaped that scene and genre to this day. The film is comprised of exclusive interviews, private photos and home videos that offer in-depth access to a scene that has remained insulated and undocumented until now.

  • A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan

    Various Artists

    Year: 1995

    Runtime: 1 hr 19 min

Already a legend among musicians, Stevie Ray Vaughan was bringing new relevance and popularity to the blues when his career was cut short in a fatal helicopter accident following a 1990 concert appearance. His music offered the drama and sheer firepower of rock, and his flamboyant live shows likewise proved well suited to arena-sized crowds, yet there was little argument that Vaughan's fealty to the blues remained at the core of his style. This 1996 concert tribute underscores that common denominator through muscular performances from contemporary blues masters who readily (and appropriately) confirm the Texas guitarist as a true peer--it's no small matter that bonafide influences Buddy Guy and B.B. King cite the honoree on an equal plane with Vaughan's most obvious rock forebear, Jimi Hendrix.
