A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan

Various Artists

Year: 1995

Runtime: 01:19:14

Already a legend among musicians, Stevie Ray Vaughan was bringing new relevance and popularity to the blues when his career was cut short in a fatal helicopter accident following a 1990 concert appearance. His music offered the drama and sheer firepower of rock, and his flamboyant live shows likewise proved well suited to arena-sized crowds, yet there was little argument that Vaughan's fealty to the blues remained at the core of his style. This 1996 concert tribute underscores that common denominator through muscular performances from contemporary blues masters who readily (and appropriately) confirm the Texas guitarist as a true peer--it's no small matter that bonafide influences Buddy Guy and B.B. King cite the honoree on an equal plane with Vaughan's most obvious rock forebear, Jimi Hendrix.

  • Soundstage Blues Summit In Chicago

    Muddy Waters And Friends

    Year: 1973

    Runtime: 59 min

In July 1974, a group of Chicago based blues artists who had already achieved legendary status gathered together with some of their younger "blues brethren" from all over the country to pay tribute to the man most responsible for bringing blues from the Mississippi Delta upriver to Chicago, Muddy Waters. Appearing with Muddy that night were his contemporaries Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Junior Wells and Pinetop Perkins, and from the next generation of blues lovers and performers, Mike Bloomfield, Buddy Miles, Johnny Winter, Dr. John, and Nick Gravenites -- all artists who were on their way to becoming legends themselves. What resulted from that joyous teaming was a truly historic session that not only presented some of the greatest blues classics ever written, but a never-to-be-forgotten hour that truly demonstrates the love of music by one generation for another. And even more remarkable, the show became the first-ever presentation of a public television series that was destined to become one of the most admired series of musical events ever televised. That night, in a show that hasn’t been seen on television for four decades, Soundstage was born. And now, almost a half-century later, it is back to thrill new generations of blues aficionados.

  • Supershow: The Last Great Jam of the '60s

    Various Artists

    Year: 1968

    Runtime: 1 hr 11 min

In 1969 the cream of contemporary rock, blues, and jazz talent gathered in a disused linoleum factory to the west of London. Filmed over two days, they produced some magical collaborations, clearly inspired by the company they were all keeping. The list of featured artists is a who’s who of the period including Eric Clapton, Jon Hiseman’s Colosseum, Buddy Miles, Stephen Stills, Jack Bruce, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Modern Jazz Quartet, Buddy Guy, Roland Kirk Quartet and Glen Campbell, with a full supporting cast. The two day session was an opportunity for many of these musicians to play outside of their normal genre. Roland Kirk plays jazz with his quartet and then joins in with the rockers; the Modern Jazz Quartet give an interlude of ethereal calm before Buddy Guy, Jack Bruce, Buddy Miles and Dick Heckstall-Smith take liberties with "Mary Had A Little Lamb!"
