  • Pass The Jar

    Zac Brown Band

    Year: 2009

    Runtime: 1 hr 56 min

"Not only is this a stellar recording of a nearly flawless performance, but it's also peppered with star-studded cameos and a few cover songs of the household-favorite variety. More importantly, it reveals Zac Brown and his band in their most comfortable and confident element — the live setting. Nothing against Brown's recorded material, but after hearing this October 30, 2009 concert from Atlanta, there's really no argument that Brown and band prefer the stage to the studio. The fawning ""Whatever It Is"" opens the set with rootsy instruments twanging and grinding under Brown's good ol' boy drawl, but you can almost hear the high-fives in the crowd following an excellent cover of the Band's ""The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."" They do similar justice to a barn-burning rendition of ""The Devil Went Down To Georgia."" Kid Rock lends his graveled growl on a Zippo-hoisting version of Marshall Tucker Band's ""Can't You See"" and it's great to hear Shawn Mullins pipe in on the Jimmy Buffett-esque ""Toes,"" though it's Little Big Town's lush harmonic panorama on the heartwarming ""Colder Weather"" that shines brightest here."

  • Eight Days A Week: The Touring Years

    The Beatles

    Year: 2016

    Runtime: 1 hr 46 min

In 1962 four young men - John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr - came together to form the 20th century musical phenomenon known as 'The Beatles'. The band stormed Europe in 1963 and, in 1964, they conquered America. Their groundbreaking world tours changed global youth culture forever and, arguably, invented mass entertainment as we know it today. All the while, the group were composing and recording a series of extraordinarily successful singles and albums. However, the relentless pressure of such unprecedented fame (which in 1966 became uncontrollable turmoil) led to the decision to stop touring. In the ensuing years The Beatles were then free to focus on a series of albums that changed the face of recorded music. Master storyteller and Oscar winner, Ron Howard, explores this incredible journey in his own unique way: How did The Beatles do this? How did they cope with all the fame and pressure? How did they not only survive, but go on to revolutionise popular music? With original interviews, footage, staggering live performances, and the intimate study of character that Ron Howard is known for, he puts us right inside this extraordinary adventure, answering the question everyone always wants to know: What was it like to be there?

    Coldplay

    Year: 2003

    Runtime: 1 hr 32 min

Riding high on the phenomenal success of A Rush of Blood to the Head, Coldplay is in peak form on Coldplay Live 2003. This concert was filmed (on Super-16mm film) and recorded in Sydney's Horden Pavilion on July 21 and 22, 2003, during an exhaustive year-long world tour, and the medium-sized arena provides a fitting stage for the London-based rock quartet, not so grand as to overwhelm the music, but large enough to indicate their large and loyal following, which includes enthusiastic fans of either gender. Especially when played in DTS 5.1 surround, this 90-minute concert is richer, thicker, and (of course) louder than Coldplay's studio recordings, lending a wall-of-sound expansiveness to the band's signature sound, which draws from such diverse influences as Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Verve, U2, and their own unique sonic landscape. "Politik" gets the gig off to a rousing start, and other impressive highlights include "Daylight," "Yellow," the as-yet-unreleased new song "Moses," and the popular hits "In My Place," "Clocks," and "The Scientist." And while the concert visuals are slick and professional, this film--the latter containing a truncated 70-minute version of the same performance--are best appreciated for their pristine audio quality.

And yet, on the other hand, her inability to really crack open the American pop market over the course of her career is a story that is heard all too often from groups hailing from nations as pop powerful as Australia and the U.K. Eventually, with the hugely successful "Can't Get You Out of My Head," Kylie would rattle the American pop psyche, reminding the rather insular scene that the bubbly girl who had first made waves with the 1987 cover of "The Loco Motion" had developed into a stylish, experienced, and able pop performer with a clear agenda — both musically and visually — and the chops to match. To focus on Minogue's American problem would only be looking at a small fraction of the larger story.

From the schizophrenic instrument swaps to the bass-drum heavy foot-stomping tunes, Mumford and Sons produce a slice of music that is both wonderful and intrinsically dashing...and our cameras were there to prove it.

Cyndi Lauper, the punky New York princess who just wanted to have fun in the 80's, has matured into a woman who can add an organic honesty to classic standards, as featured on this Soundstage and in her most recent album At Last. From Edith Piaf's "La Vie En Rose" and "Hymn to Love," to the playful "Makin' Whoopee," to somber serenades like "Unchained Melody," "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "Walk on By," Lauper elevates her adoring audience with a revealing candor, an impressive range and a pensive sense for interpretation.
But her performance is also a celebration with Lauper's innate sparkle shining through the fun flashbacks "Time After Time," "True Colors," "Money Changes Everything," "Shine" and, of course, "Girls Just Want To Have Fun." With the audience dancing on chairs, and the artist running up the aisles and delivering anecdotal asides, Grammy-winning Lauper reveals that she's a true performer - at ease with her identity as a modern pop powerhouse, but prepared to revel in her most recent reincarnation.

  • Live at Wembley

    Beyoncé

    Year: 2004

    Runtime: 2 hr 14 min

Beyonce's London fans go crazy when the Destiny's Child beauty, on her first solo international tour, descends to a massive stage while suspended, upside down, from a wire. After a delicate landing, the star embarks on a set of recent hits immersed in complicated arrangements, including the Arabic sound of "Baby Boy" and "Naughty Girl," the chunky, hypnotic funk of "Hip Hop Star," and Beyonce: Live at Wembley's best performance, the powerful "Work It Out," in which the diva is at her clearest, jazziest, and most soulful. Not everything works. The bottom falls out of "Gift from Virgo," "Be with You" is forgettable, and Beyonce's stage patter needs polish. But a Destiny's Child medley accompanied by only a DJ is innovative and fun, "Summertime" proves a breezy dance number, and "Crazy in Love" is bolstered by what sounds like the old Stax horns.

In 1987, after 100 shows around the world on The Bridge Tour, Billy Joel accepted the Kremlin’s invitation to the U.S.S.R. for six fully-staged rock shows in Moscow and Leningrad, fulfilling a long-time desire to perform in Russia. During their stay, Billy and his family, along with musicians, staff, and a huge press entourage spent their days interacting with the Russian people, forging true bonds of friendship wherever they went. With Beatlemania at its height in 1965, Shea Stadium in Queens, New York, was the site of the first stadium show ever by The Beatles, or any rock & roll band for that matter. The companion to the acclaimed documentary The Last Play At Shea, the premiere release of Billy Joel Live At Shea Stadium features a full concert-length program: more than two hours of hits, history, memories and guest stars including Paul McCartney, all in riveting performances worthy of the historic building where it all went down.

He was present with his campaign at the hotel in Los Angeles on the evening of his assassination. Although he made a successful television comeback, his health was beginning to fail, as he had always expected, following bouts of rheumatic fever in childhood. This knowledge of his vulnerability had always spurred him on to exploit his musical talent while still young. He died at 37, following a heart operation in Los Angeles.
