  • Come Together: A Beatles Tribute

    Various Artists

    Year: 2014

    Runtime: 52 min

If music is the universal language, then the songs of the Beatles are its Rosetta Stone. Their compositions are an international language that crosses all borders and overrides cultural differences. Though they no longer exist as the Fab Four, their musical legacy lives on through generations of fans, and the thousands of tribute bands who "come together" worldwide, to interpret and perform their music. There are an estimated 8,000 Beatles tribute bands globally who perform at multiple Beatles festivals and conventions throughout the world. Shot almost entirely in Liverpool, the birthplace of The Beatles, and captured in HD during International Beatles Week, Come Together is a tribute to that legacy - a phenomena that shows no signs of stopping. Paul once said, "A hundred years from now, people will listen to the music of the Beatles the same way we listen to Mozart." Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. The lengths some tribute groups go to ranges from simple vocal harmonies, to what are affectionately called "Boots and Suits" bands. Regardless of nationality, they attempt to look and sound as close to the originals as possible. The result is a creative composite of musical expression. The documentary illustrates their diversification in sound and illusion. Come Together, moderated on-camera by John Lennon's sister, Julia Baird, captures that spirit, motivation, energy and interpretation through in-depth interviews, rare footage, stunning concert performances, and personal stories by bands and fans alike. People have come together from Tokyo to Stockholm to Las Vegas to share their love of the music of The Beatles and the positive and uplifting message it brings. This is their tribute to them as well.

  • Copyright Criminals

    Various Artists

    Year: 2009

    Runtime: 53 min

Copyright Criminals examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic expression, copyright law, and (of course) money. This documentary traces the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry. For more than thirty years, innovative hip-hop performers and producers have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new, otherwise original compositions. When lawyers and record companies got involved, what was once referred to as a “borrowed melody” became a “copyright infringement.” The film showcases many of hip-hop music’s founding figures like Public Enemy, De La Soul, and Digital Underground—while also featuring emerging hip-hop artists from record labels Definitive Jux, Rhymesayers, Ninja Tune, and more. It also provides an in-depth look at artists who have been sampled, such as Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown’s drummer and the world’s most sampled musician), as well as commentary by another highly sampled musician, funk legend George Clinton. As artists find ever more inventive ways to insert old influences into new material, this documentary asks a critical question, on behalf of an entire creative community: Can you own a sound? USA Today calls Copyright Criminals "...a compelling and insightful documentary illuminating both sides of a hotly debated issue: Should the original artists get paid when someone samples their work? Are current copyright laws out of step with our mashed-up, high-tech culture?" "...an amazing documentary on the history of sampling" -Rob Sheffield, Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone. "...so vibrant in presentation and in its use of audio/visual mash-ups proving their points that it's not only one of the most enjoyable documentaries you've seen in a while, it's one of the only ones you can dance to." - Hartford Courant. "Benjamin Franzen and Kembrew McLeod's exceptionally smart and energetic documentary lays out the complexities of sampling--artistic and political, legal and philosophical."

The banjo has been an emblem of American culture for centuries, yet few realize the instrument's complicated, checkered past. Narrated by Steve Martin and featuring such banjo masters as Pete Seeger, Earl Scruggs and Béla Fleck, GIVE ME THE BANJO goes beyond the stereotypes and delves into the musical odyssey of the banjo, from its African roots to the present day. Brought to the New World by enslaved Africans, the banjo has shaped many American musical forms: the minstrel show, ragtime, and early jazz, old-time folk and the folk revival, as well as blues, bluegrass, country and world music. Packed with great music, this documentary brings together a wide variety of banjo experts - including music historians, instrument-makers, folklorists, and players of all styles - and profiles past greats such as Charlie Poole and Gus Cannon to celebrate the cultural richness of America's quintessential musical instrument.

The music documentary Play Your Own Thing provides a comprehensive history of European Jazz. It explores the origins of the US-influenced Jazz clubs after the Second World War, the first steps independent of American jazz and the various changes of direction that have repeatedly occurred in European jazz in the search for that "own voice" that European jazz musicians have helped to form. Featuring the great masters of European jazz such as Chris Barber, Jan Garbarek, Juliette Gréco, Stefano Bollani and Till Brönner, to name but a few, the film provides a wealth of styles in Jazz. For his third documentary on jazz, film-maker Julian Benedikt travelled to a wide variety of European countries in search of an all-embracing documentation of European jazz music. His story telling is neither too sophisticated nor does he simply reproduce the known clichés, rather the movie engages its audience with very personal impressions of European jazz, past and present. Accompanied by rarely seen archival footage featuring such influencing American jazz legends as Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, this unique document offers a collection of sparkling musical gems from both sides of the Atlantic. Year: 2008

    Runtime: 1 hr 10 min

The Spanish-language musical form known as reggaeton took shape in Puerto Rico during the late 1990s. In lieu of emerging as its own unique and inimitable genre, it actually comprised a mélange of several pre-established genres - specifically, rap, hip hop, reggae and Caribbean music. Per its title, the documentary Straight Outta Puerto Rico: Reggaeton's Rough Road to Glory discusses the evolution of reggaeton from an indigenous Puerto Rican style (born and bred in the poverty-strewn barrios of San Juan) to a transcontinental phenomenon. It also details reggaeton's ultimate status as a government-discouraged form of grassroots personal expression with incendiary political content that prompted widespread censorship, political crackdowns, and suppression. The documentary contains interviews and performances featuring reggaeton superstars such as The Luny Tunes, DJ Nelson, Mexicano 777 and many others.
