  • Color Me Obsessed

    The Replacements

    Year: 2011

    Runtime: 2 hr 3 min

For some aging music fans and kids with a passion for musical history, The Replacements are rock and roll defined. This Minneapolis quartet took a teenage-punk attitude, threw it in a blender with classic and pop rock, and then poured it into a Middle American pint glass. Over the band's 12-year existence, its live sets were magical, a total mess, or both-depending on your mood and the members' respective blood alcohol levels. Gorman Bechard's remarkable history of the 'Mats takes us from their first show as the Impediments to their 1991 onstage breakup in Chicago, and everywhere in between. Bechard bravely eschews including the band's music, photos, and live footage, instead relying solely on the fans: their well-kept memories, hilarious anecdotes, and differing points of views about the foursome's wildly varied discography and infamous antics. Bechard has recruited an impressive roster of influential fans: musicians such as Husker Du, Babes in Toyland, The Decemberists, The Hold Steady, Archers of Loaf, Titus Andronicus, and Goo Goo Dolls; writers such as Jack Rabid, Legs McNeil, Robert Christgau, Jim DeRogatis, and Greg Kot; and actors such as George Wendt, Tom Arnold, and Dave Foley. Sprinkled in among that esteemed group are the more mainstream fans, who often give the most insightful and heartfelt perspectives of all. Follower or not, after taking in COLOR ME OBSESSED, you'll be ready to run home, gather some 'Mats albums, and design a perfect soundtrack of your own.

  • On the Rock Trail

    The Rolling Stones

    Year: 2015

    Runtime: 54 min

From their beginnings in the 60s, The Rolling Stones were rebels, the very antithesis of their rivals, The Beatles. Track the Stones from their middle-class roots, through their international recognition as the bad boys of Rock. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards met in Dartford Station, London where they formed a musical union to last a lifetime. Brian Jones was not so lucky and he died tragically young. Bill Wyman no longer rolls with the Stones but Charlie Watts has remained a steady constant throughout, and not-quite-so-new boy Ronnie Wood has held on for the ride. Follow these legendary musicians and find the spaces and places where they made their mark. There were colossal highs and desperate lows, addresses ranging from country mansions to spells of detention at Her Majesty's Pleasure. Yet The Rolling Stones have survived and still strut their stuff and fill arenas. Presented by former artist manager from London's famous Tin Pan Alley, Liam Dale, "On the Rock Trail" takes you on an informative (and at times humorous) journey behind the scenes of these icons of the music industry. This documentary contains no music from The Rolling Stones and is not authorized by The Rolling Stones or any of their affiliate entities.

  • The Story of The Rolling Stones

    The Rolling Stones

    Year: 2013

    Runtime: 53 min

The Rolling Stones are one of the greatest and most influential rock bands of our time having sold in excess of 200 million records worldwide. This fascinating programme tells the story of the early days of the band and how they became The Rolling Stones we know today. Jagger and Richards were childhood friends becoming reacquainted in 1960 at Dartford Railway Station due to their love of music. Later meeting Brian Jones who in 1962 went on to form The Rolling Stones. The story of the early Stones is very much a tale of how Brian Jones forged the band with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and became a key catalyst in the creation of their early sound. But whether it was the pressures of early fame or through his addiction to drugs his role in the band became untenable. Even though he is credited as originally forming the band he was eventually over shadowed by Jagger and Richard and his role gradually diminished until in June 1969 he was asked to leave. Less than a month later and under questionable circumstances he was found dead in his own swimming pool believed to have taken his own life. Using performance footage and rare interviews footage with Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Keith Richards and Bill Wyman as well as The Stones Manager (1962/67) Tony Calder and Brain Jones former partner Pat Andrews this in depth programme provides a fascinating insight into the original formation of this incredible super group during their first decade. The programme concludes at the staged event in Hype Park 5th July 1969 which became recognised as a memorial concert to Brian Jones. This DVD is a must for all music and Rolling Stones fans.

  • Tuff Luck

    Tuff Luck

    Year: 2014

    Runtime: 1 hr 38 min

For every rock and roll band striving to grab that ever elusive brass ring and "make it" in the music business, there's a million others, equally as talented, equally as inspired, equally as hard working, that unfortunately never get their shot for a confluence of reasons. . . timing, fate and just plain dumb luck. Some bands were meant to succeed and others, despite their efforts, are destined to crash and burn, their golden dreams of musical stardom abruptly torpedoed and vanquished. Velocity Films is proud to announce their latest film venture. A documentary charting the dramatic rise and fall of Tuff Luck, a criminally unheralded '80s hard rock band blessed with prodigious musical gifts. In an alternate universe, Tuff Luck should have graced the cover of Rolling Stone magazine and instead has withered in total obscurity. That is until now. . . Tuff Luck is headed up by Andrew Klein, the younger brother of Tuff Luck drummer, the late Todd Kelly. As for the story arc, Klein explains, "The film will focus on Tuff Luck's formation, rise, and eventual demise while also drawing attention to a once thriving and vital music scene in Florida. Based in South Florida, the aptly named Tuff Luck became the hottest attraction on the local music scene by 1986, routinely drawing thousands of fans to their gigs. They released one album on Ann Boleyn's underground label, New Renaissance Records. The self-entitled debut included fan favorites such as "Sleaze if you Please", "Tonight Tonight", and "Take it or Leave it. " Tuff Luck was on the precipice of landing a huge record deal with Atlantic Records when they seemingly had everything going for them. Over the course of their ten-year career, the gifted hard rock outfit were an odds on favorite in the "next big thing" rock and roll sweepstakes and had expanded their profile, opening shows for hair metal giants, Dokken and Stryper among others. What made Tuff Luck stand out from the countless other metal bands populating the region was their uncanny level of musicianship, skill and consummate showmanship. Virtuoso guitarist Dave Scott and bassist James Marino were championed as future stars on the rise in Mike Varney's high profile monthly column in Guitar Player magazine. Meanwhile, drummer Todd Kelly was voted Florida's "Best Drummer" on multiple occasions, attracting attention from endorsement suitors such as Paiste. Rounding out the metal quartet was vocalist Kenny Monroe, with his commanding stage presence and smoky charisma, he was the ultimate front man. All the ingredients were in place for a national breakthrough, all except the elusive major record deal. Had the fickle hand of fate anointed them the career break they deserved, their story would have been an altogether different one. Tuff Luck would have been recognized as one of the leaders of the '80s hard rock scene. Under the aegis of Klein, the saga of the band doesn't end there. The new documentary chronicles Tuff Luck's uphill quest for world domination, emboldened by a refreshing "warts and all" slant. It's a story of survival, a story of stubborn dedication, a story of fierce commitment and unwavering ambition. A story of four close friends who shared big dreams. Quite simply, it's a tribute to the enduring spirit and magic of rock and roll music and a story that we, the fortunate and the beleaguered, can all relate. Featuring hands-on involvement from the entire group who contributed extensive interviews, the documentary also yields a rich treasure trove of visual material including scores of photographs, vintage memorabilia and electrifying concert performances.

  • Classic Albums: The Joshua Tree

    U2

    Year: 2006

    Runtime: 51 min

An outstanding entry in the Classic Albums video series, this hourlong documentary, produced in 1999, assembles the creators of U2's The Joshua Tree to comment about the musical magic that occurred a dozen years earlier in a home studio in Dublin. Merging past and present, coproducers Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, mixer Steve Lillywhite, and guitarist The Edge isolate separate tracks on the album's master tapes to illustrate how some of U2's greatest songs were layered with each individual's crucial contributions. Bono listens in while Lanois deconstructs the masters, appearing genuinely shy about his vocal tracks but eloquent in describing the album as "not Irish at all" in its innovative sound, but "very Irish" in terms of the emotions that inspired it. Later, The Edge describes the "cinematic" sound of the album, intended to transport the listener to a specific physical location based on each song's mood and atmosphere.
Bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen weigh in with illuminating comments, and the hour offers an abundance of video excerpts, concert footage, and memorable anecdotes. Eno sets the record straight on the torturous process of recording "Where the Streets Have No Name" (he almost "accidentally" erased the master tape in hopes of starting from scratch), and Bono admits to a heavy Led Zeppelin influence on "Bullet the Blue Sky." Archival footage shows the recording in progress (one wishes there were more of it), and what emerges from this collective reminiscence is an enlightening study of mutual chemistry and fruitful collaboration. Upon viewing this video, another listening to The Joshua Tree will be more rewarding than ever.

  • Come Together: A Beatles Tribute

    Various Artists

    Year: 2014

    Runtime: 52 min

If music is the universal language, then the songs of the Beatles are its Rosetta Stone. Their compositions are an international language that crosses all borders and overrides cultural differences. Though they no longer exist as the Fab Four, their musical legacy lives on through generations of fans, and the thousands of tribute bands who "come together" worldwide, to interpret and perform their music. There are an estimated 8,000 Beatles tribute bands globally who perform at multiple Beatles festivals and conventions throughout the world. Shot almost entirely in Liverpool, the birthplace of The Beatles, and captured in HD during International Beatles Week, Come Together is a tribute to that legacy - a phenomena that shows no signs of stopping. Paul once said, "A hundred years from now, people will listen to the music of the Beatles the same way we listen to Mozart." Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. The lengths some tribute groups go to ranges from simple vocal harmonies, to what are affectionately called "Boots and Suits" bands. Regardless of nationality, they attempt to look and sound as close to the originals as possible. The result is a creative composite of musical expression. The documentary illustrates their diversification in sound and illusion. Come Together, moderated on-camera by John Lennon's sister, Julia Baird, captures that spirit, motivation, energy and interpretation through in-depth interviews, rare footage, stunning concert performances, and personal stories by bands and fans alike. People have come together from Tokyo to Stockholm to Las Vegas to share their love of the music of The Beatles and the positive and uplifting message it brings. This is their tribute to them as well.

  • Copyright Criminals

    Various Artists

    Year: 2009

    Runtime: 53 min

Copyright Criminals examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic expression, copyright law, and (of course) money. This documentary traces the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry. For more than thirty years, innovative hip-hop performers and producers have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new, otherwise original compositions. When lawyers and record companies got involved, what was once referred to as a “borrowed melody” became a “copyright infringement.” The film showcases many of hip-hop music’s founding figures like Public Enemy, De La Soul, and Digital Underground—while also featuring emerging hip-hop artists from record labels Definitive Jux, Rhymesayers, Ninja Tune, and more. It also provides an in-depth look at artists who have been sampled, such as Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown’s drummer and the world’s most sampled musician), as well as commentary by another highly sampled musician, funk legend George Clinton. As artists find ever more inventive ways to insert old influences into new material, this documentary asks a critical question, on behalf of an entire creative community: Can you own a sound? USA Today calls Copyright Criminals "...a compelling and insightful documentary illuminating both sides of a hotly debated issue: Should the original artists get paid when someone samples their work? Are current copyright laws out of step with our mashed-up, high-tech culture?" "...an amazing documentary on the history of sampling" -Rob Sheffield, Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone. "...so vibrant in presentation and in its use of audio/visual mash-ups proving their points that it's not only one of the most enjoyable documentaries you've seen in a while, it's one of the only ones you can dance to." - Hartford Courant. "Benjamin Franzen and Kembrew McLeod's exceptionally smart and energetic documentary lays out the complexities of sampling--artistic and political, legal and philosophical."
