  • Classic Albums: Disraeli Gears

    Cream

    Year: 1966

    Runtime: 49 min

CREAM was rock's first true "super group". Combining the extraordinary talents of ERIC CLAPTON, GINGER BAKER and JACK BRUCE, this power trio became the template for many hard rock acts of the seventies. The band remains a huge influence on the genre even to this day. Powered by hits such as "Strange Brew" and "Sunshine of Your Love", Cream's second album, DISRAELI GEARS, moved the band beyond the blues into hard-driving, psychedelic pop. This was the album that not only broke the group in the United States but also established Clapton as an international superstar. This addition of Disraeli Gears to the acclaimed Classic Albums series features brand new interviews with Clapton, Baker and Bruce, along with lyricist Pete Brown, Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, John Mayall and Manfred Mann. Also included on this program are acoustic performances, original studio tracks and archival live footage.

  • The Ringmaster General

    Dave Stewart

    Year: 2012

    Runtime: 1 hr 19 min

Dave Stewart is best known as the other half of Annie Lennox's Eurythmics. At the onset of MTV and the video age, Stewart wasn't as photogenic as his artistic foil. He still knows this, so he enlists the help of Diane Birch, Alison Krauss and Joss Stone to give his music a recognizable voice. Stewart himself sings in a low rumble that's powerful but too dark for commercial outlets and this solo album is clearly meant to reach a wide audience. The production is top notch and played and arranged so tightly that you can hear why others have required his services for decades. Like its predecessor, 2011's The Blackbird Diaries, The Ringmaster General was written and recorded in five days at his Blackbird Studios in Nashville, with a solid band of pros backing his every step. Joss Stone tears up "I Got Love." Diane Birch toys with Stewart on "Just Another Fall" and Alison Krauss adds her solemn harmonies to "Drowning In the Blues." Stewart handles himself well alone on "A Different Man Now" and with a group of backing vocalists on his celebration of his new home, "A New Song For Nashville."

From his music, the fashion and the theatrical stage presentation merged together which turned David Bowie into the biggest craze since the Beatles. Formed by three Detroit siblings six years before the Sex Pistols stormed the airwaves with "God Save the Queen," Death's blisteringly aggressive music was initially dismissed by record labels more interested in cashing-in on the glitzy disco craze. As contracts were cancelled and debts mounted, the band that ushered in a dangerous new era of music vanished into obscurity. Three decades later, however, the discovery of Death's only demo reveals just how far ahead of their time the band really was.

  • History Of The Eagles

    Eagles

    Year: 2012

    Runtime: 3 hr 53 min

Director Alison Ellwood, along with Producer (and Academy Award-winning documentarian), Alex Gibney, meticulously crafts an intimate patchwork of rare archival material, concert footage, and unseen home movies exploring the evolution and enduring popularity of one of America's truly definitive bands. Inspired by the vibrant Los Angeles music scene, Glenn Frey and Don Henley left Linda Ronstadt's backup band in 1971 to team with Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner and form the Eagles. While personal stories from band members (later including Don Felder, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit), managers, and music-industry luminaries frame the narrative, it's the unexpected moments-recording sessions, backstage interactions, and even a whimsical sequence from the Desperado cover shoot-that convey the extraordinary bond linking artists, music, and the times (an era when country-tinged rock and finely-honed harmonies spoke to a nation still reeling from unrest). But the band was not impervious to its own unrest, and its conflicts prompted several departures and ultimately led to its demise (or long vacation). Part One follows the band from its formation in 1971 through its ascendancy in the 70's to the infamous unravelling in the fall of 1980. Part Two tracks the group from its reunion in 1994 through the triumphant Hell Freezes Over tour, the 2007 release of the album, The Long Road Out of Eden (which sold over 5-1/2 million copies, worldwide, and garnered the band its 5th and 6th GrammyR Awards), and its ongoing success as an international touring act. This history of the Eagles skips neither a beat nor a hit song, and we're reminded why the band's greatest hits collection (Vol. I) remains the best-selling album of the 20th century. - John Nein, Sundance Institute

Taupin’s deft lyrical touch shines on “I’ve Got 2 Wings” and “The Open Chord”, both flush with clever turns of phrase. “A Good Heart” is pure Elton balladry—heartfelt feelings framed by his timeless voice. “Looking Up” expresses gratitude with characteristic flair, like a 2016 version of “I’m Still Standing”. Wonderful Crazy Night shows that rock ‘n’ roll remains Elton John’s North Star.

"It was like the world went from black & white to Technicolor," says Keith Richards of the emergence of Elvis Presley in the mid-'50s, and this look at the King's first official album (the legendary Sun Sessions weren't issued in album form until well after the fact) backs up that claim. The one-hour program (plus 40 minutes of bonus interview material on the program) combines performance footage (the early TV shows are not to be missed), photos, and more to limn Presley's early days, when he combined country, blues, and R&B to forge a unique, galvanizing style. Sun producer Sam Phillips, author Peter Guralnick, Presley's musicians, and others are on hand to provide insight and background. But in the end, of course, it comes down to the music--and when you're talking about the likes of "Blue Suede Shoes," "Tutti Frutti," "Money Honey," and "Heartbreak Hotel" (a single that actually wasn't on the album), "classic" hardly begins to cover it.

Oh, the heartache. Oh, the drug intake. And oh, the sales records they did break. It's all here in this 70-minute, 1997 chronicle of the making of one of pop music's biggest albums ever, Rumours. All five members of Fleetwood Mac's most successful incarnation are interviewed, and their comments are even more candid than the confessional songs ("Dreams," "Go Your Own Way" et al.) on the album itself; descriptions of the torturous process of making a record while John and Christine McVie's marriage and the Lindsey Buckingham- Stevie Nicks liaison were breaking up at the same time makes for compelling, if slightly discomfiting, viewing. Meanwhile, lest one forget that Rumours was terrific as well as revealing, plenty of attention is paid to the songs. Particularly fascinating (as with most Classic Albums packages) are the breakdowns of the separate instrumental and vocal components of individual tracks. A great tale, wonderfully told.

Zappa's studio process is amazingly revealed when Dweezil and Zappa "Vaultmeister" Joe Travers sit down at a mixing table to analyze the master tapes of classic Zappa tracks like the hilariously controversial "Dyna-Moe Humm." In addition to vintage archival clips of Zappa discussing his music and career, and home movies of Zappa's band on tour during the mid-1970s, this program also includes the complete video of Zappa performing "I'm the Slime" on Saturday Night Live in 1976, live footage of a 1973 performance of "Montana," and a new performance of "Camarillo Brillo" by Dweezil's tribute band, Zappa Plays Zappa (with Dweezil playing one of his father's favorite Gibson guitars). Bonus features also include a Travers-hosted trip into the massive Zappa archives, and further deconstruction of Zappa tracks "Dirty Love" and "Nanook Rubs It." If you're a casual Zappa fan, this program will turn you into a passionate convert. For those who've loved Zappa all along, it's a little bit of heaven here on Earth.

    Genesis

    Year: 2014

    Runtime: 1 hr 30 min

This is a feature-length documentary about Genesis - one of the most successful bands in rock history. And also one of the most vilified. A band that almost died in the mid-1970s with the loss of its leader ; it then survived a change of lead singer and style to storm the charts in the 1980s. Remarkably, its principle members developed successful solo careers in parallel with the band’s.

With full access to the key players, including Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, the film recounts an extraordinary musical story .

They were British public school boys, whose experimental progressive rock band, led by Peter Gabriel, attracted for much of the 1970s a fervent, mainly young male, following. But then in the 1980s, the Phil Collins-led Genesis kicked into an altogether different, more pop, sound , attracting a massive following - including many young women fans . In the process, they became one the most successful bands in the world. Their 1986 album “Invisible Touch”, for example, produced five US top ten singles including number one with the title song.
