  • Live at Shea Stadium

    Billy Joel

    Year: 2008

    Runtime: 2 hr 21 min

With Beatlemania at its height in 1965, Shea Stadium in Queens, New York, was the site of the first stadium show ever by The Beatles, or any rock & roll band for that matter. The Beatles' Shea performances made an impression on a young working-class musician from Long Island named Billy Joel. When the Mets built a new stadium and said goodbye to Shea in 2008, the local native turned superstar was the logical choice to give it a proper sendoff.

The companion to the acclaimed documentary The Last Play At Shea, the premiere release of Billy Joel Live At Shea Stadium features a full concert-length program: more than two hours of hits, history, memories and guest stars including Paul McCartney, all in riveting performances worthy of the historic building where it all went down.

From the ears, eyes, and hands of renowned percussionist and educator Billy Martin (Medeski Martin & Wood), Life on Drums is a striking examination of the drummer's art, captivatingly rendered with cinematic grace and intrigue. As relevant to experienced musicians as it is to newcomers, Life on Drums combines candid, wide-ranging conversations with Martin's first drum teacher Allen Herman and beautifully filmed performances of Martin's compositions for percussion ensemble and improvised trap set solos and duets. The film's distinct elements work together to impart a refreshing approach to instruction that prizes the creative and the intuitive over the merely technical. The resulting film - fiery and passionate yet practical and insightful - is a riveting extension of Martin's open-ended approach to percussion, improvisation, and music

    Brett Dennen

    Year: 2013

    Runtime: 13 min

Smoke And Mirrors is an odd title to sketch across the cover of Brett Dennen's 5th album. The tall, laid-back Californian has always brewed a batch of heartfelt, honest songwriting; a quality that seems more at the forefront than ever before. Born in the mountains around his cabin home, the three songs here bring with them a certain rustic ease. I suppose that's just what happens when your writing sessions are bookended by long hikes and cool dips in the lake. But the most obvious quality is just how personal Brett gets here, belting out anthems about staying true to ones' self, reminding us of the danger of overthinking things, or just declaring an anonymous love for someone. No Smoke, No Mirrors...just simple, acoustic honesty in our latest session.

The title of the programme, ‘Queens of Pop’, in itself shows where the emphasis lies – none of those simplistic chart rankings, but instead a documentary series that looks at our cultural history, dealing with the women who shaped popular music over the past fifty years.

  • Hammersmith Odeon London '75

    Bruce Springsteen

    Year: 2016

    Runtime: 2 hr 10 min

This is the stuff of legend. Born to Run had been released to unanimous acclaim. Bruce and band went to the U.K., where they were hyped as the band to see-and with the stakes so high, they didn’t back down. These are definitive performances. “Thunder Road” has never sounded more naked and vulnerable. “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” is clutch, a tight, affirmative performance that swings and punches with authority. “Spirit in the Night” slinks and unfolds like the New Jersey shoreline. The mix from Bob Clearmountain points up the band's incomparable chemistry, unlocking the magic and spotlighting the instruments while never sacrificing the wall of sound. By 1975, Springsteen had a complex web of songs with the most inventive structures imaginable. From the ethereal organ haunting the ghosts of “Lost in the Flood” or the simple piano accompaniment driving “For You” to the wistful memories of “Backstreets” and the urban sprawl of “Jungleland,” Bruce and The E Street Band were never more operatic or intense.

The Concert offers a souvenir of said tour, editing together highlights from late summer 2008 stints in Boston and Montreal. Celine throws an occasional curve ball -- her soul parade at the end of the show veers on high camp as she sings far too much James Brown for her own good -- but, as always, she gives the people what they want via a recitation of the expected hits in arrangements so splashy they sparkle even without the visuals. Cold War Kids

    Year: 2013

    Runtime: 1 hr 16 min

If there is one thing Cold War Kids have taught us it's never judge a book by its cover - or a band by its name. The Californian indie rockers performed a slick, soulful, grown-up set at Regency Ballroom in support in support of "Dear Miss Lonelyhearts." Dipping into newer tracks such as rollicking electro stomper 'Miracle Mile' and raw renditions of fan favourites like 'We Used To Vacation' and 'Hang Me Up To Dry', the Kids showed us they are more than capable of putting on a phenomenal live performance that can keep everyone in the house rocking until the final minute.

  • Live 2003

    Coldplay

    Year: 2003

    Runtime: 1 hr 32 min

Riding high on the phenomenal success of A Rush of Blood to the Head, Coldplay is in peak form on Coldplay Live 2003. This concert was filmed (on Super-16mm film) and recorded in Sydney's Horden Pavilion on July 21 and 22, 2003, during an exhaustive year-long world tour, and the medium-sized arena provides a fitting stage for the London-based rock quartet, not so grand as to overwhelm the music, but large enough to indicate their large and loyal following, which includes enthusiastic fans of either gender. Especially when played in DTS 5.1 surround, this 90-minute concert is richer, thicker, and (of course) louder than Coldplay's studio recordings, lending a wall-of-sound expansiveness to the band's signature sound, which draws from such diverse influences as Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Verve, U2, and their own unique sonic landscape. "Politik" gets the gig off to a rousing start, and other impressive highlights include "Daylight," "Yellow," the as-yet-unreleased new song "Moses," and the popular hits "In My Place," "Clocks," and "The Scientist." And while the concert visuals are slick and professional, this film--the latter containing a truncated 70-minute version of the same performance--are best appreciated for their pristine audio quality.
