The Dead at the End of ‘So Many Roads’

Ben Fong-Torres Posted to Artist Spotlight on July 8, 2016

It’s not a sexy, round-number anniversary, but I bet Deadheads know that July 9 was the date of the last Grateful Dead concert with Jerry Garcia. That was in 1995, at Soldier Field in Chicago. With the surviving Dead having celebrated a 50th anniversary with a farewell tour—and then a return of most of them, as Dead & Company—they continue to be in the news. They are on Qello Concerts, in the Classic Albums series (Anthem to Beauty) and in Festival Express, roc…

Happy Birthday, Sir Paul

Ben Fong-Torres Posted to Artist Spotlight on June 17, 2016

It doesn’t sound right, but on June 18, Paul McCartney turns 64. Will you still need me? Will you still feed me? When I’m 64? Plus ten. That’s right. I’ve interviewed all three: Fogerty very early in the history of Creedence Clearwater Revival, in 1968; Nicks at a height of her time with Fleetwood Mac, while recording Rumours, in 1976, and Dylan on his tour with The Band in early ‘74. Dylan, who hadn’t toured in eight…

Brian Wilson: ‘Singing with My Brothers’

Ben Fong-Torres Posted to Artist Spotlight on May 20, 2016

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Pet Sounds, I’m thinking about the all- time lead Beach Boy, Brian Wilson. I met him only once, but I’ve written about him and the various versions of the perennial Boys over the years, ranging from short pieces about the Beach Boys features we have here on Qello, to a review of Love & Mercy, the 2014 movie about him starring John Cusack and Paul Dano, to this item, from early 2010: The Beach Boys may be washed up, but it&r…
