The Doors
The mania Jim Morrison elicits decades after his death is just one of the many fascinating and seemingly eternal aspects of the Doors. Lest it be forgotten, the band also recorded some of the darkest and most challenging music of their time. What is so distinctive about the Los Angeles group is how it successfully melded rock, jazz-inspired improvisation and Weill-esque angularity into dramatic settings for Morrison's haunting baritone and acid-damaged poetry. Their amazing range set them apart from their psychedelic brethren, as they moved seamlessly from the propelling rock of "Break on Through" to the breathy beauty of "Indian Summer," the manic blues of "Five to One" and the Coltrane-flavored "Light My Fire." Whether you feel that Morrison was a brilliant and complex modern-day shaman or a second-rate poet who lost it to alcohol and pills, it's impossible to deny the long-lasting impact the Doors have had on rock 'n' roll. In 2002, following a 20 year hiatus in the wake of Morrison's death, Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek reunited, enlisting ex-Cult singer Ian Astbury on lead vocals and shamanistic behavior duties. The band now calls itself Riders On the Storm.

Feast of Friends
The Doors
Year: 2015
Runtime: 39 min
Feast of Friends, filmed in 1968, was the first and only film produced about The Doors by The Doors. It offers a cinematic look at The Doors on the road during their summer ’68 tour. Whilst never truly completed, the film provides a stylistic approach in true sixties cinéma vérité style. Concert performances are intercut with fly-on-the-wall footage of the group in their natural habitat, sometimes playful, sensitive, chaotic and touching. Other than a few appearances in film festivals in 1968, an official release would never be seen until now. Completely restored from the original negative, as supervised by Jim Morrison, the film has been colour corrected and cleaned in high definition with the soundtrack totally remixed and remastered by long-time Doors’ collaborator Bruce Botnick. -

Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970
The Doors
Year: 1970
Runtime: 1 hr 6 min
August, 1970: With Jim Morrison's ongoing Miami obscenity trial casting an ominous shadow over the band, The Doors flew to England to play the Isle of Wight Festival. Waiting for them at "The Last Great Festival" were over 600,000 fans who had already torn down the barriers, crashed the gates, and enjoyed performances by the world's top acts such as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Miles Davis and Joni Mitchell. The Doors took the stage at 2 am, playing with the weight of the trial on their backs, and showed fans they still had the magic that had propelled them to the top during the Summer of Love. "We played with a controlled fury and Jim was in fine vocal form," said Doors organist Ray Manzarek. "He sang for all he was worth, but moved nary a muscle. Dionysus had been shackled." Less than a year later, The Doors were no more. Here, for the very first time, is the last Doors concert ever filmed. The Doors: Live at the Isle of Wight. -

Classic Albums: Electric Ladyland
Jimi Hendrix
Year: 1967
Runtime: 1 hr
Bursting with ideas and energy, Jimi Hendrix's second album release of 1968 following Axis: Bold as Love was a double-LP set that showcased virtually everything the guitar genius had to offer: blistering blues Voodoo Chile, galaxy-patrolling space jams 1983... A Merman I Should Turn to Be, psychedelic soul Crosstown Traffic, and skyscraping rock Voodoo Child Slight Return. In the midst of all this was even a hit song--Hendrix's remarkable reading of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," featuring a series of baton-passing guitar solos, all distinct and brilliant. Seemingly diffuse when first released; in hindsight, kaleidoscopically eclectic. -

Some Girls: Live in Texas
The Rolling Stones
Year: 1977
Runtime: 1 hr 22 min
The Rolling Stones 1978 tour of the USA in support of that year’s “Some Girls” album is considered by fans to be one of their very best. The tour followed immediately on the release of the “Some Girls” album and by the time the band arrived in Texas in mid-July the album had hit the No.1 spot on the US charts. The tour took a “back to basics” approach, with the band and their music very much at the forefront and little or no elaborate staging. Filmed at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on 18 July 1978, this concert is typical of the tour with the Rolling Stones delivering a raw, energetic performance in front of a crowd who are clearly loving the show. Many of the tracks from “Some Girls” are included in the live set with a sprinkling of Stones classics from earlier albums. Originally shot on 16mm film, the footage has been carefully restored and the sound remixed and remastered by Bob Clearmountain from the original multitrack tapes. -

As recent events have proven, Led Zeppelin continues to be one of the biggest bands of all time. Along with Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, they are often cited as the Godfathers of Heavy Metal. But there was more to Zeppelin than just heavy riffs. Led Zeppelin's first album serves as a blueprint for what would follow in the rest of their career. There's a huge debt to the Blues music that they loved so much, which was the initial common thread for Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, with artists such as Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters proving particularly influential.
This fascinating program tells the story of the music and artists that have influenced the legendary British Rock pioneers, Led Zeppelin. On the Rock Trail
Pink Floyd
Year: 2015
Runtime: 56 min
From their early beginnings in the affluent University City of Cambridge, Pink Floyd rose, Phoenix-like, to create music that was both challenging and unique. While London was swinging in the sixties, Pink Floyd went psychedelic, producing sound and light shows that captured the mood of the time. With the departure of founding member Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd’s 1970s reincarnation produced such classic albums as Darkside of the Moon and Wish You Were Here before The Wall took them storming into the 1980s. Yet troubles behind the scenes resulted in the loss of Roger Walters and after legal battles over the Pink Floyd name, the band was rose again to achieve even greater success. The story of Pink Floyd is one of the most fascinating in the history of Rock, and On the Rock Trail will leave no stone unturned in the search of the men behind one of the Rock's biggest and most distinctive sounds. Presented by former artist manager from London's famous Tin Pan Alley, Liam Dale, On the Rock Trail takes you on an informative (and at times humorous) journey behind the scenes of these icons of the music industry. This documentary contains no music from Pink Floyd and is not authorized by Pink Floyd or any of their affiliate entities. -

One For the Road
The Kinks
Year: 1980
Runtime: 1 hr 10 min
On this 1980 live album, the first power chords of “The Hard Way” resume the full-on guitar pummel that first announced The Kinks with “You Really Got Me.” Their '70s hit “Catch Me Now I’m Falling” includes the riff from The Rolling Stones’ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” The Pretenders covered “Stop Your Sobbing”. The Jam nailed “David Watts.” “Lola” was again becoming a minor hit. As per usual, The Kinks admit what other bands won’t. They did careful overdubs on this live album to make it sound even better. While there are greatest-hits albums that collect the group’s highlights, this live set is a great reintroduction for old fans.
