Celine Dion
On the off chance you've been living in a self-dug hole since before the new millennium due to Armageddon-related jitters, Celine Dion is not just a diva -- she seems to have emerged as a Titan among divas. Since releasing her first English language recording in 1990, she's managed to give Whitney and Mariah a good scare with her remarkable vocal capabilities, while making everyone all wistful and nostalgic for a ship that sunk eons ago and becoming the first (and only) "New Streisand" to do a duet with the "Old, Original Streisand." With so many achievements under her belt in so little time, it seems likely that when the day is done, Dion may very well emerge atop the diva heap.

Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert
Celine Dion
Year: 2008
Runtime: 1 hr 42 min
Freed from her long-term Las Vegas engagement in 2007, Celine Dion took a similar spectacle on the road to support her 2007 album Taking Chances. The Concert offers a souvenir of said tour, editing together highlights from late summer 2008 stints in Boston and Montreal. Celine throws an occasional curve ball -- her soul parade at the end of the show veers on high camp as she sings far too much James Brown for her own good -- but, as always, she gives the people what they want via a recitation of the expected hits in arrangements so splashy they sparkle even without the visuals. If this doesn't sound like a good time, well, you're not the audience -- this is for the fans and they will be pleased. -

Showgirl
Kylie Minogue
Year: 2005
Runtime: 1 hr 49 min
On the one hand, pop musically speaking, worldbeaters such as Kylie Minogue are few and far between. Singers and performers of her stature and popularity rarely maintain their power for as long as she was able to. Her streaks of number one singles in both Australia and the U.K. are nearly insurmountable. And yet, on the other hand, her inability to really crack open the American pop market over the course of her career is a story that is heard all too often from groups hailing from nations as pop powerful as Australia and the U.K. Eventually, with the hugely successful "Can't Get You Out of My Head," Kylie would rattle the American pop psyche, reminding the rather insular scene that the bubbly girl who had first made waves with the 1987 cover of "The Loco Motion" had developed into a stylish, experienced, and able pop performer with a clear agenda — both musically and visually — and the chops to match. To focus on Minogue's American problem would only be looking at a small fraction of the larger story. -
